Why You Should Drink Tart Cherry Juice After You Workout And Before You Go To Sleep

I’ll admit I was skeptical at first. Tart Cherry Juice, really?

If it has so many health benefits why haven’t I heard about them before? And juice? Isn’t juice filled with sugar which leads to inflammation? Aren’t we all trying to avoid inflammation?

But then I dug deeper and there have been studies, real scientific-control-group studies. So I started to read, and I was shocked that more people weren’t talking about this -- that more people weren't drinking this anti inflammatory drink!

Treating Muscle Pain & Promoting Muscle Recovery

Tart Cherries have the highest anti-inflammatory content of any food, more than blueberries, pomegranates and other fruits.

Wait, what? Let me write that again.

Tart Cherries (scientifically known as Montmorency) have the highest anti-inflammatory content of any food. Yes, you read that right - both times!

According to researchers at OHSU (Oregon Health & Science University) tart cherry juice may be a safer way to treat muscle pain and inflammation than over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen.

Incredibly, the antioxidants in Tart Cherry Juice promote muscle recovery and fight inflammation in a similar way to commercial drugs like ibuprofen.

Many professional endurance athletes even subscribe to a regiment of daily tart cherry juice leading up to and following big races. Tart Cherry Juice consumption is huge among both professional triathletes and runners.

If you want an anti-inflammatory bang for your buck and a powerful tool for muscle recovery, tart cherry juice is for you!

I was surprised to find that much of this is research is not new. The OHSU study was conducted in 2010, yet somehow this knowledge has stayed in the world of professional athletes and wellness experts.

The fact that the healing power of Tart Cherry Juice is not mainstream is baffling. It can do so much for so many. Please help to spread the word: Tart Cherry Juice works for treating muscle pain and promoting muscle recovery.

A Key to Better Sleep

We all know that good sleep is the secret to everything, good skin, happiness, lower-anxiety, better gut health, overall wellbeing, the list goes on-and-on-and-on.

(And if you don’t yet know about the cult of sleep hygiene just spend a moment with Arianna or GP and you’ll soon be onboard.)

But let’s be honest here; even if you believe in sleep hygiene, most of us don’t have the time, energy, patience or resources to completely overhaul our sleep routine.

The good news? You can add one simple and delicious treat each night to help promote melatonin development and great sleep, and that one magical sleep potion, you guessed it -- tart cherry juice!

Research at the School of Life Sciences in Newcastle, UK suggests that the consumption of Tart Cherry Juice increases the body’s production of melatonin which is beneficial to improved sleep duration and quality.

In addition to great sleep, Tart Cherry Juice is also low on the glycemic scale and studies have found that it can actually help in the regulation of blood sugar.

So what are you waiting for? Pour yourself a glass of Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

How I Drink Tart Cherry Juice

I personally drink a nightly mug of Tart Cherry Tea every evening. I make it by adding Tart Cherry Tonic to a mug of hot water. I do my best to drink it while reading or doing some other wind-down activity, but to be perfectly honest sometimes I drink it while watching TV.

For workouts, particularly yoga, I like to add a bit of Tart Cherry Tonic to warm or room-temperature water in my insulated water bottle. I rarely drink cold beverages unless I’ve had an extremely high intensity workout or it’s very hot outside. It takes so much more energy for the body to process cold foods than warm ones, so whenever possible I avoid ice and lean towards warm drinks.

When the weather is hot (and I’m feeling super motivated), or if I’m planning an intense workout, hike or day at the beach, I make a batch of this magical Tart Cherry Workout Water. It’s refreshing and delicious, but more importantly provides the electrolytes, potassium, vitamin C and anti-inflammatory antioxidants that are critical to physical recovery.

I definitely recommend giving it a try. Just one small caveat, once you’ve tried this you’ll never want drink a pre-packaged sports drink again!
